Sport & Healthy Activity
Introduction
Healthy Activity KS3
At Pilgrim we create opportunities for pupils to engage in a high-quality physical education curriculum. While inspiring all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities, the healthy activity program also encourages and provides opportunities for pupils in KS3 to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect while encouraging a balanced lifestyle.
Pearson Level 1 BTEC Introductory To Sport
This is a non-examination course that can be studied in key stage 4 over one or two years. Pupils can achieve an award for completion of three units and a certificate for completion of five units. Each unit is graded at level 1 pass, merit or distinction and this will inform the final grade for the qualification.
The course is designed around practical skills and tasks that place an emphasis on pupils demonstrating what they can do. The qualification offers pupils the opportunity to acquire and develop generic, transferable, and sector-specific skills, to complete tasks and demonstrate a level of achievement that enables them to progress to further learning. It will suit any pupil interested in sport, being active, wanting to try a new interest or considering a post-16 course or career in sport and leisure.
The course enables pupils to try out a range of sports in a safe, secure and supportive environment. There are also opportunities to try new sports and demonstrate sports of personal interest. The course contributes to the delivery of the Hope Curriculum and to support the school in its delivery of fundamental British values.
Sport and Hope
The course enables pupils to demonstrate sisu – qualities of determination and courage to try new things and progress at their pace by improving personal sporting skills. Pupils embrace Ikiga – pursuing ideas and interests that enhance their life and practice storge – in caring, nurturing and supporting each other as individuals and as a team. Pupils appreciate Marcas Rashford as a Pilgrim School hopeful hero and identify and discuss the personal qualities and skills of personal heroes and legends in the world of sport.
Sport and Fundamental British Values
Pupils practice principles of following rules during play, being democratic in making choices for teams and choice of sports, being tolerant and respectful of each other whether planning and collaborating as a team or playing against each other. They realise that individuals have a diverse range of abilities and skills and that everyone has an equal right to be heard or participate in activities, whatever their level.
Goal
Obtaining a level 1 qualification in sport can lead to a level 2 or above course in sport and leisure, an apprenticeship or support for an academic course post-16 and an eventual career in sport or leisure.
The course will use a schema focus approach, covering a unit a term (see pathways below).
As there is no examination, the course is portfolio based. Pupils will build knowledge and skills through practical activities, individual and team tasks and then complete an assignment independently which will be marked internally and externally verified. The course is very flexible in its approach and learning styles and pupils are given a range of ways to present notes and assessment tasks. These could include mind maps and diagrams, annotated photographs, written and oral reports observational reports from tutors.
Examples of Schema
Pathways
For Key Stage 3, we have worked hard to tailor a scheme of work which is accessible for our students and sits within the national curriculum for healthy activity. The Scheme contains the subject content at KS3 which is Outdoor and adventurous, health and fitness, Athletics, invasion games and striking and fielding. Each unit outlines the key knowledge and curriculum intent while providing the flex we need as an alternative provision to meet pupil need. Our pupils will also access general activities such as walking and dog walking to alleviate anxiety and move them towards 30 minutes of exercise on a regular basis.
For our Key Stage 4 students we also offer a L1 BTEC pathway for them to access. These pathways are closely linked to some of the KS3 pathways and are set out to further their knowledge of healthy activity and sport in a way that can suit their interests. The BTEC L1 is an engaging subject that offers flexibility and coursework based assessment throughout the period of study and one which can be tailored to suit our pupils needs.
