Termly Read

The Unforgotten Coat

Our read for this term comes from the current Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell Boyce; well- known for his humorous yet touching storytelling, this book is no exception.

Th Unforgotten Coat is a short read that explores important themes of migration and belonging. Aimed at younger readers, this book would most likely be enjoyed by our KS3 and KS2 pupils however this does not limit all ages from reading, including adults! Find out more below:

The Unforgotten Coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Recommended reading age: 9-12“When two Mongolian brothers inexplicably appear one morning in Julie’s Year Six class, no one, least of all Julie, knows what to make of them. But then Chingis, the older of the two, proclaims that Julie is to be their “Good Guide,” a nomadic tradition that makes her responsible for welcoming the brothers to their new home. Now Julie must somehow navigate them through football, school uniforms, and British slang, all while trying to win Shocky’s attention and an invitation to her friend Mimi’s house. Often laugh-out-loud funny, this moving and simply told novella tugs at the heart— a unique story of immigration, both fierce in its telling and magical in its characters.”

This book is available on our digital library ePlatform…if you’re quick you might be the first to borrow it! We also have a limited number of hard copies in school; however, the title is also available to purchase on Amazon for a reasonable price.

The aim of our Termly Read is that it becomes a collaborative activity; some of our groups in base will be reading together during tutor times. Therefore, with this in mind, we have created an online Padlet for everyone who is reading the book to contribute their own thoughts and ideas in response to discussion prompts. Follow the link:
